Why Slow Fashion is Important to Me

When I first thought about starting Vêtements Deslandes I wanted to focus on creating a small change in the fashion industry. If I’m honest, part of me has always shied away from creating things because I didn’t want to contribute to the largest polluting industry. Going to school for fashion highlighted the negative factors of this industry and finding out more influenced me to move correctly. Recently, I’ve shifted that mindset and realized that my contribution to the fashion industry would be different.

Slow fashion has always been around but with the influence of media and the pandemic, e-commerce increased in cooperation with the restrictions. The rise in fast fashion took off as well as mass consumption in many industries. I think it’s safe to say we have surpassed the worst and are now focused on true fulfillment rather than fast and temporary pumps of dopamine. With that being said, a large part of Vêtements Deslandes intention is to design pieces of clothing that serve a purpose. My biggest inspiration comes from seeing textiles so often I will create a garment based on its characteristics. Quality of fabric is important to me because lord knows wearing clothes can be uncomfortable. I have a blog post on Understanding Textiles if you’d like to learn more. Vêtements Deslandes uses all sorts of textiles (deadstock, recycled and new) so yes, that entails that some are bad for the environment as well which is why purpose, quantity and it’s life span is so so important. The quality of your garment isn’t the only thing that matters when it comes to how long it lasts. Simple care goes a long way (stay tuned for wash + care post).

I want my clients to share the same mindset of re-wearing clothing which is why I focus on creating bright, textured and classic looks that can be styled in many different ways. I love fashion and art because they are ambiguous. Creating Vêtements Deslandes was not to say “this is what you should be wearing.” I want to show people that with conscious effort, we can bring back sentiment and own clothing that is unique, sustainable and limited. We need to get rid of the mindset that each occasion needs a new outfit and that re-wearing clothing means you don’t have money. Instead, I want to help people see that clothing is versatile especially when you love your clothes. Just like how scent can trigger a memory, clothing does too. On a grand scale, the clothes you wear are not important so if it is how you express yourself, make sure you're expressing your unique style and not just seeking inspiration from trends because they come and go. My goal is to create unique experiences with clothing by creating one of one pieces or creating customs from a drawing board.

With that being said, slow fashion will always be important to Vêtements Deslandes. Right now it's very easy for me to use words like “sustainable”, “ethical” or “slow fashion” because it’s just me working but I promise that even with growth; people, animals and the planet will be put into great consideration.
